What’s happening this weekend at WHSC: 420 championships, a few reminders, and our regular weekly programme of events. For all the latest news, see https://www.whsc.ie/category/news/

420 Championships

We’re looking forward to hosting the Munster 420 Championships at the club this weekend.

Around 13 boats have entered so far. This week saw an impressive two-day training effort run by the class leading up to the event.

We’re delighted to have a strong local showing in a fleet that has grown steadily in WHSC. Coached by our own Geoff Power and Patrick Whyte, participating from WHSC are Fodhla Dunne and Sinead O’Reilly, Laura Belton and Melanie Jephson, Max Passberger and Jack Maree, Cian O’Reilly and Joe Landers, Max Sweetnam and Peter Doyle.

Good luck to all sailors taking part.

Team Racing

If you’re aged 14 or over, an experienced sailor and interested in taking part in Team Racing this summer, please book your space now. All details here.

Laser coaching

The first hugely successful session of laser coaching got underway last Tuesday. There are three sessions to go and we’d love to see more teenagers who are getting ready to move on from the Topper class participating. Email prwhsc@gmail.com if you’d like to join the WhatsApp group.

Reminders

Please update your membership details. You can do this by logging into the membership portal and making sure that we have full details for each family member where applicable – name, address, date of birth, email, mobile. Some family members only have one parent registered on WHSC system and we know there are more of you, so please take a few moments to update the details.

Membership cards

New members, please collect your cards from behind the bar. There are some cards belonging to long-standing members being held there too. You might even have bar credit waiting to be used.

Weekly calendar

Our weekly summer programme of events is now fully up and running with a busy schedule of regular sessions including:
  • Dinghy racing (Wednesday eve 6.30pm and Saturday afternoon 3pm)
  • Cruiser racing (Thursday eve and Sunday afternoon 3pm)
  • Water Time (Sunday morning at 11am)
  • Oppie development coaching (Saturday morning 9.30am)
  • Adult beginner coaching (Mondays and Fridays at 6.30pm)
  • Adult laser coaching (Tuesdays at 6.30pm)
  • As well as the packed programme of junior courses which run all week.

None of these events are possible without volunteers, including committee members, class captains, coaching organisers, qualified rib drivers, experienced crews, shore helpers, people to help with trolleys and even serve pasta on Saturday mornings to younger sailors. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, and if you haven’t yet got involved in that side of club life, please give a few hours in whatever capacity you can.

Last year, we were very reliant on a limited number of volunteers to oversee safety during racing and Water Time, and it meant that some members didn’t get out to sail as much as they would like. This year, we’d like to make sure that doesn’t happen, so please get involved.

Keep an eye on the individual WhatsApp groups for opportunities to volunteer, as well as updates and late changes to the schedule. If you need any help navigating what’s happening at the club, you can always email prwhsc@gmail.com and we’ll do what we can to help.
