WHSC News for March and beyond

Welcome to WHSC Newsletter #2 for 2022. If you’re reading this in your email, please click the link below for news of some of the activities already underway at the club, and a taste for what’s to come over the next few months – it’s a long one.

Events coming up in 2022

2022 is going to be an exciting year at WHSC, so mark your calendars. We are hosting three major events this year: the Laser Connaughts on May 7 to 8, Topper Nationals July 1-3 and 420 & Flying 15 South Coast August 13-14. We’re expecting fleets of 80 for Lasers and over one hundred for Toppers. None of this will be possible without the help of volunteers to ensure it all runs smoothly, so please do step forward and help show the kind of community spirit that makes WHSC such a great club.

Book Now for Summer Courses

The summer sailing schedule is now online with a fantastic programme of training for all levels, and places are already filling up. This year, we’re going ahead with a mix of half and full days, depending on the course.

Half day courses on offer include Start Sailing, Basic Skills, Go Racing Optimist, Kites & Wires.

Our adult members will be delighted to learn that the extremely popular Adult Week is returning and this year is running for four days only to facilitate the Topper Nationals which will run from Friday, July 1st – July 3rd at WHSC.

Full day courses for young sailors include: Improving Skills, Advanced Boat Handling, Go Racing Dinghy and Adventurer.

As ever, sailors can attain only one Irish Sailing qualification per year (except for Start Sailing to Basic Skills for a sailor of the correct age). So it’s advisable to do your qualification level early in the season to give yourself the best chance of passing. You can book and attend another course that you qualify for but will not be assessed for the second course, but you will become a better sailor.

Another new development is that Sean Morton will be co-ordinating boat rental, and you can contact him at boatrentals@whsc.ie.

How to Renew your Membership

Of course, you need to be a member in order to do a course at WHSC. Membership renewal is now open and members should rejoin before March 31 to avail of the Early Bird offer of up to €50 on your membership card. Members can renew here

To renew membership:

1) Login to the membership portal (primary member for family memberships)

2) Click ‘Renew’ on the menu.

3) Confirm renewal items.

4) An invoice will be generated which you can choose to pay online with ‘GoCardless’, by direct debit, or (this is the preferred method) via bank transfer (**please include name and membership number from invoice in bank transfer details**) or cheque.

Any amendments, changes or problems contact Mike Kelliher (email: whsc.webmaster@gmail.com), or Ronan Brazil (email: whscmembers@gmail.com)

A big thank you to the many members who have already paid their 2022 subscriptions.

Sail and Run on St Patrick’s weekend

The season is getting up and running – literally – early this year with a Sail and Run event around the village on Saturday March 19. There will be separate events for adults and children, with first gun at 1pm. Adults will sail a triangle followed by a 4k run or walk. Kids will sail a triangle followed by 1.5k run or walk.

Afterwards, there will be food available in the club and a chance to watch the Ireland v Scotland match at 4.45pm.

If you are interested in participated, please contact Sailing Secretary Stuart Harris on 087 969 6564 – in order to organise the event, he needs to know numbers.
