Great performances by WHSC sailors in the 1720 Easterns

Congratulations to WHSC sailors including helms cruiser captain Julian Hughes and Alex Coleman who took part in the 1720 Easterns at Howth Yacht Club at the weekend.

Julian’s Root 1 placed fifth overall, while Alex’s Red Eye came 12th in the BNRG-sponsored championships.

There were great performances too by an adopted Dunmore boat, Ben Scallan’s True North (4th overall), and a former Dunmore boat After Midnight with a Dunmore man onboard, John Murphy, which came 8th, across the two days of racing, characterised by easterly winds and gorgeous sunshine on Saturday.

Fifteen boats from ten clubs participated overall.

Successful Topper Traveller event in difficult conditions

Congratulations to the 40 or so hardy sailors who participated in the Topper Traveller event at WHSC on Sunday July 11 in less than ideal conditions.

There was some great sailing and huge resilience and grit on display – as well as lumpy seas, changeable winds and a lot of rain.

The first race saw strong winds and a very big swell. Winds suddenly dropped to slight for race 2 and 3, and were moderate again by race 4.

A big well done to the overall winner, Daniel Palmer from Ballyholme Yacht Club. And special congratulations too to the highest ranking WHSC competitor, Isabelle Passberger.

This weekend @ WHSC: June 25th and 26th

What’s happening this weekend at WHSC: 420 championships, a few reminders, and our regular weekly programme of events. For all the latest news, see

420 Championships

We’re looking forward to hosting the Munster 420 Championships at the club this weekend.

Around 13 boats have entered so far. This week saw an impressive two-day training effort run by the class leading up to the event.

We’re delighted to have a strong local showing in a fleet that has grown steadily in WHSC. Coached by our own Geoff Power and Patrick Whyte, participating from WHSC are Fodhla Dunne and Sinead O’Reilly, Laura Belton and Melanie Jephson, Max Passberger and Jack Maree, Cian O’Reilly and Joe Landers, Max Sweetnam and Peter Doyle.

Good luck to all sailors taking part.

Team Racing

If you’re aged 14 or over, an experienced sailor and interested in taking part in Team Racing this summer, please book your space now. All details here.

Laser coaching

The first hugely successful session of laser coaching got underway last Tuesday. There are three sessions to go and we’d love to see more teenagers who are getting ready to move on from the Topper class participating. Email if you’d like to join the WhatsApp group.

Please update your membership details. You can do this by logging into the membership portal and making sure that we have full details for each family member where applicable – name, address, date of birth, email, mobile. Some family members only have one parent registered on WHSC system and we know there are more of you, so please take a few moments to update the details.

Membership cards

New members, please collect your cards from behind the bar. There are some cards belonging to long-standing members being held there too. You might even have bar credit waiting to be used.

Weekly calendar

Our weekly summer programme of events is now fully up and running with a busy schedule of regular sessions including:
  • Dinghy racing (Wednesday eve 6.30pm and Saturday afternoon 3pm)
  • Cruiser racing (Thursday eve and Sunday afternoon 3pm)
  • Water Time (Sunday morning at 11am)
  • Oppie development coaching (Saturday morning 9.30am)
  • Adult beginner coaching (Mondays and Fridays at 6.30pm)
  • Adult laser coaching (Tuesdays at 6.30pm)
  • As well as the packed programme of junior courses which run all week.

None of these events are possible without volunteers, including committee members, class captains, coaching organisers, qualified rib drivers, experienced crews, shore helpers, people to help with trolleys and even serve pasta on Saturday mornings to younger sailors. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, and if you haven’t yet got involved in that side of club life, please give a few hours in whatever capacity you can.

Last year, we were very reliant on a limited number of volunteers to oversee safety during racing and Water Time, and it meant that some members didn’t get out to sail as much as they would like. This year, we’d like to make sure that doesn’t happen, so please get involved.

Keep an eye on the individual WhatsApp groups for opportunities to volunteer, as well as updates and late changes to the schedule. If you need any help navigating what’s happening at the club, you can always email and we’ll do what we can to help.

Munster 420s

We’re really looking forward to welcoming around fifteen 420s to the Munster 420 Championships 2021 taking place at the club this weekend, June 24th and 25th. We’ll be looking for volunteers to help with rescue and shore duty, so please watch this space.

Name the Committee Boat competition

Entries are flying in already for the competition to name the new committee boat.

We’ve had some great initial suggestions. Remember, if you’re under 18, you can enter as often as you like for your chance to win a €50 Viking Marine voucher and to have your idea part of club history.

Enter by emailing and you can send as many ideas as you like between now and the July 9 closing date.

Oppie coaching

Optimist Development Coaching got off to a great start this weekend, with 18 sailors taking part in pods. Thanks to International Optimist Dinghy Association Ireland iodai for their support.

Cruisers, mark your calendars

Make a note in your diary for these upcoming dates:

Sunday 4th July is the Lady Helm Race.

Sunday 11th July is the Haig race to Fethard and back in aid of RNLI’s 25th anniversary.

Have a boat you’re not using?

There’s huge demand from members new and old for previously loved boats this year, so if you’ve got one lying around that you’re not using or you’re trading up, please consider selling to a fellow member first.

We’ve had enquiries from prospective buyers for everything from Optimists to Toppers to kayaks. Email and we’ll help you get the word out to members.
