Records funds raised for RNLI at this year’s coffee morning

WHSC Commodore Roy Power has thanked everyone who contributed to raising record funds for the RNLI during the club’s annual fundraising coffee morning and fresh produce sale.

“Over a very busy weekend – with the Club Cruiser Championships, the Dale Morris and Harris Trophy Parent and Child races also on – it was an excellent opportunity to do our annual RNLI fundraising coffee morning and fresh produce sale,” he said.

“Organised by Maria Walsh and Trish Power, the morning was a fantastic success. The final money count has yet to be done and it looks like it will be a record total. Our sincere thanks to all those who donated prizes and cakes, bought and sold tickets and flowers and fresh produce, and to the local RNLI crew who came along on the day to meet junior members.”

He also gave special mention “for two enterprising junior members Anna Brazil and Polly Rogers” who wrote, researched and designed a “fantastic” Nooks and Crooks guide to Dunmore East to raise funds for the lifeboat.

“And please remember next weekend is WHSC Club Dinghy Champships which promises to be another great weekend,” he added.

*TIME CHANGE*: Dale Morris and Parent and Child Races This Saturday

PLEASE NOTE: The schedule for Saturday’s Fun Races has changed.

  • 9.50am: Briefing for Harris Trophy Parent and Child Race
  • 10.15am: First gun Harris Trophy Parent and Child race
  • 12.50pm: Briefing for Dale Morris
  • 1.15pm: First gun Dale Morris

This Saturday sees the much-anticipated return of our Annual Fun Races, to coincide with the RNLI coffee morning and fresh produce sale.

With the cruisers starting their racing at 12 midday, we’ll have plenty of space around the moorings to make sure our sailors are well challenged.

Both the Dale Morris and the Harris cup will be raced for this week, so come down, enjoy some coffee cake in aid of the RNLI and then get the kids (and yourself) out racing.

Harris ‘Parent and Child’ Trophy

Optimist sailors, grab a parent for the Parent and Child Race. Starting at the slip, parents sail the Optimist round a named mark and back to the slip before handing over to their partner. The child will sail the same course with the winning boat first to finish at the slip.

Briefing 9.50am, FG 10.15am

Register here:

Dale Morris

All sailors under 16 are welcome to participate in the Dale Morris Perpetual Trophy. Traditionally starting at Stoney Cove, one sailor swims to the boat where their partner is waiting. Both sail to the first mark and perform a ‘man overboard’, then sail to the second mark and perform a capsize. First boat across the finish line wins.

The race will start (due to high water) on the slip this year.

Any boat caught paddling will be DSQ without a hearing.

Briefing 12.50, Start 1.15pm

Register here:

The final few copies of Dauntless Courage about the Dunmore East Lifeboat will be on sale on Saturday, and you can also pick up a Nooks and Crooks of Dunmore East leaflet designed, written and illustrated by our own Anna Brazil and Polly Rogers, and make a donation to the RNLI.

We’re still looking for offers of baked goods in aid of the RNLI – please contact Trish Power if you’re able to donate something: 086 832 5930.

What’s happening this week @ WHSC: June 21 to 27

Munster 420s

We’re really looking forward to welcoming around fifteen 420s to the Munster 420 Championships 2021 taking place at the club this weekend, June 24th and 25th. We’ll be looking for volunteers to help with rescue and shore duty, so please watch this space.

Name the Committee Boat competition

Entries are flying in already for the competition to name the new committee boat.

We’ve had some great initial suggestions. Remember, if you’re under 18, you can enter as often as you like for your chance to win a €50 Viking Marine voucher and to have your idea part of club history.

Enter by emailing and you can send as many ideas as you like between now and the July 9 closing date.

Oppie coaching

Optimist Development Coaching got off to a great start this weekend, with 18 sailors taking part in pods. Thanks to International Optimist Dinghy Association Ireland iodai for their support.

Cruisers, mark your calendars

Make a note in your diary for these upcoming dates:

Sunday 4th July is the Lady Helm Race.

Sunday 11th July is the Haig race to Fethard and back in aid of RNLI’s 25th anniversary.

Have a boat you’re not using?

There’s huge demand from members new and old for previously loved boats this year, so if you’ve got one lying around that you’re not using or you’re trading up, please consider selling to a fellow member first.

We’ve had enquiries from prospective buyers for everything from Optimists to Toppers to kayaks. Email and we’ll help you get the word out to members.

Weekly calendar

Our weekly summer programme of events is up and running with a busy schedule of regular sessions including:
